Korea has several widely practiced Martial Arts, but few people outside the country are familiar with Ssireum (Korean belt wrestling). Traditionally done on a mound of sand with the wrestlers rolling their trousers down to provide a grip (with no shirt), modern Ssireum uses a satba (belt and thigh wrap) to provide the opponent a firm hold.
Ssireum is considered to be a cultural treasure by both North and South Korea. In 2018 in an unprecedented joint application was submitted to the Intergovernmental Committee for Safeguarding the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, Cultural Organization) to include Ssireum.
