Archery has been a profound part of Korean history dating back centuries; it was instrumental in multiple large scale battles, helping them ward off invasions. Although their opponents relied heavily on spears and swords, Korea held the advantage of distance by utilizing the long-range power of the bow and arrow as a defense strategy (maintaining their desire to be a peaceful people, only using force as a means of protection).
Today traditional Korean bows can still be seen in use in folk villages, similar to what the Hwarang Warriors carried into battle on horseback during the Silla dynasty.
